Front elevations of shops and houses at 509-511 Old Ford Road (this section renamed Wick Lane), Poplar, looking north-east. To the left is Spring Street with a two-wheel horse drawn cart waiting in the road and full sacks on the pavement. Part of a two-storey brick built half stucco terrace with a cornice running along the top. Number 509, on the left, is a greengrocer's shop run by George Fraser (according to the 1899 Kelly's telephone directory) with vegetables displayed on trestle tables with sacks draped over the front, one of which mentions Bradley Spitalfields [market]. The shopkeeper stands in the doorway next to the weighing scales, keeping an eye on two young boys standing on the pavement, and above the shop the awning has been folded out to provide shade for the produce. Number 511 is a confectioners owned by William Musamoor (according to the 1899 Kelly's telephone directory) and has trays of sweets and glass sweet jars in the window. Two young men stand in the doorway. Posters in the window of the confectioners advertise "R.White's hot drinks", "ginger beer ice cream" and "ginger beer and ice" and a sign reads "noted for superior vanilla ices". Around the doorway of the confectioners, where two young men are visible, are posters for "R.White's Kaola summer drink", R.White's sparkling lemonade" and "R.White's lemon squash made from the fruit". Partial view of 513 Old Ford Road on the right with iron railings. These buildings, and Spring Street, no longer exist and the area is currently a small area of trees and vegetation beside the A12.
