Description
Front elevation of Poplar Town Hall, Newby Place, Poplar. Built in 1870-71, the building features French and Italian Renaissance-style decoration. The building was set alight by incendiary bombs during the large-scale air raid on 7 September 1940. As the raid occurred on a Saturday afternoon, the building was empty and securely locked, and so the spread of the flames could not be checked. It was so badly damaged by the fire that the ruins were later demolished; a block of flats now stands on its site. A person can be seen on the right and a man wearing a top hat is standing at the entrance of the building.
