Description
A view of a shop at 68 Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow, on the corner with Raverley Street. The door is open but the shop windows are fully or partially boarded up by wooden slats. The vague outline of a man (possibly in a shop coat) can be seen standing inside. Advertisements for Lyons Tea, Batchelors Peas, Benedict Peas, Heinz 57 Baked Beans and Spratts dog food can be seen. Next door at number 66 Devons Road is Leonard Sargent & Sons, builders merchants and general ironmongers. Signs under the eaves, on the shop fascia and under the windows advertise their wares: oils, colours, varnishes, polishes, stains, lime, cement, plaster, china, glass, earthenware, bushes and soaps. The shop appears to be no longer trading: its display windows are shuttered and the windows in the upper storey are missing. Along Raverley Street on the immediate left is a vacant site fenced off by iron railings. A van is parked outside a double-gated entrance to the corner shop's back courtyard. The cobble stones on Devons Road are visible. The area appears blighted and run-down. Raverley Street and the shops no longer exist; they have been replaced by housing.
