Description
View of 79-80 Lower Marsh, Waterloo. Shown on James De La Feuille's Map of London, c1690, as a lane lined with cottages and small holdings crossing Lambeth Marsh, it was known as Lambeth Marsh until the middle of the nineteenth century when it became Lambeth Lower Marsh. By the end of the nineteenth century, it was just known as Lower Marsh. Lined with shops, it has also had a market in the street since the mid nineteenth century. The foreground is crowded with shoppers inspecting the stalls including fruit and vegetables, one stall with boxes stamped Covent Garden, Canadian Apples and Oasis. Numbers 79 and 80 are three-storey buildings with shops on the ground floor. At number 80, J. Mindel Ltd is a hardware shop. In 1895, this was a fishmongers owned by John Salter. At number 79, in 1895, was Palmer & Company, a stewed eel house.
