Vacant lot in foreground looking south-west towards Scarsdale Road, Peckham. The large building on the right was part of the Watkins's Book Binding Factory complex of buildings enclosed within the block comprising Cowan Street, Jardin Street, Scarsdale Road and Chumleigh Street. Also known as Watkins Bible Factory, it was operated by Watkins, Watkins & Co. The large building in the centre left was R. Whites mineral water factory on Neate Street which was demolished in 1970. The spire of the Grade II listed St George's Church (listing number 1386037) in Wells Way can be seen in the centre background. The church was converted to residential use by the St George's Church Housing Co-Operative in the 1990s. The picture is marked up with “C106” and the date 19/9/49. All land and buildings in the image were cleared in the 1970s to make way for the creation of Burgess Park.
