Description
Front elevations of 42-46 Leadenhall Street, City of London. Number 72 has a sign for a restaurant downstairs; it was the site of The Syren and Shipping public house. Next to this is number 46 with a nineteenth-century facade with classical frieze. This was formerly the site of African House, where Sir Nicholas Throgmorton lodged before the Royal African Company took residence; between 1672 to 1740 they had a monopoly over the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Later occupied as a warehouse. At numbers 52 to 54 stood Bricklayers' Hall until 1883, and Furness House was at number 56. People walk along the street, and cars and a truck line the length of the street into the City.
