Description
A view of Arding and Hobbs department store on the corner of Lavender Hill and St John's Road in Battersea. This was third premises of the company, built in 1884 by architects William Marriage with James & James Tolley. It became their flagship store and cost an estimated œ8,000 to build. The building has five storeys with a double-tier of shop windows: the ground-floor frontages facing St John?s Road having three bay windows, and those facing Lavender Hill have two windows. The top of the building has a round clock face. The building was run by Allders from the late 1970s until the group went into administration, and was subsequently broken up and sold. It is now split between a branch of Debenhams department store and TK Maxx retail.
