Description
A view of the entrance to Blackfriars House, 19 New Bridge Street, City of London. The Grade II listed Blackfriars House designed by F.W. Troup was built from 1913-1916. The entrance consists of double wooden doors containing windows consisting of small square panes of glass surmounted by a set of windows divided by small wooden piers. Above the windows and set within the door frame is a carved wooden sign stating 'Blackfriars House'. At the bottom of the doors are metal panels each containing at its center a single star shape within a circle. At the tops of the piers flanking the entrance doors are stone blocks containing carved even sided crosses within oval borders. Above the entrance can be seen the iron railings of the first floor balcony. The building's front is faced with Majollica tiles. Flanking the short flight of stone steps which rise to the front entrance are two stone obelisks containing carvings of entwined foliage with a single carving of a friar on each obelisk. Between the obelisks can be seen an iron frame holding a damaged lantern and on either side of the stone steps are iron hand rails leading to metal columns surmounted by sculpted lions. Bordering the front of the building are iron railings with the basement windows behind them. The windows on either side of the entrance are divided by steel piers with the heads of the bolds visible on them and contain decorations of sculpted foliage. On the outside of the windows are protective metal grills. To the left of the double doors can be seen a plastic crate containing empty milk bottles. Blackfriars House survives and the re-furbished building became a hotel known as the Crowne Plaza London - The City.
