William Hogarth first painted this self portrait in 1757-8 entitled 'Self-Portrait of William Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse'. This is the seventh and final state of the engraved versions which Hogarth produced.

Hogarth is shown seated facing to the right and wearing a round fabric cap. He is holding his palette and brushes and has a frowning expression. On his easel is the painting, as yet only in outline, of the figure of Comedy holding a mask in the form of a horned satyr. The title 'Comedy 1764' is drawn on a column in the painting. A book with a larger print tucked inside it rests at the base of the easel.
