Richard Tarlton was an actor of the Elizabethan era, known for his comic work. He is credited with developing theatre as mass entertainment and paving the way for William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Tarlton is pictured here with his pipe and tabor, in an image derived from the original in an Alphabet Book in the British Library (manuscript Harley 3885).
