Description
H.M.S. Alexandra was a 3rd class battleship built at Chatham Dockyard in 1875, and known by her crew as 'Old Alex'. In 1903 she became a mechanical training ship and was sold in 1908. Castles Shipbreaking Yard is a family business located on Millbank, with Baltic Wharf by the river where the ships were broken up and barges were built until 1870s, after which it became better known as a timber yard. The entrance to the Yard had figureheads which were taken from the ships.
