Illustration from "Cripplegate Ward" by J.J. Baddeley (1921), showing view west along Barbican (now Beech Street), City of London. In the foreground left, where the policeman is standing, is the junction with Redcross Street. Barclays Bank stands at the corner of Barbican and Golden Lane in the foreground right. Baddeley records that in 1914, the occupants of the street included importers of fancy goods, soft goods and drapery firms, artificial florists, jewellery manufacturers, hardware factors, a wire comb manufacturer, an ironmonger and two gold and silver refiners.
