The Acacia Road shelter was the first of its kind, built by the Cabmen's Shelter Fund in 1875. The shelters were small green huts which provided a place for Cabmen to buy (non alcoholic) refreshments and rest. Although the Acacia Road shelter has gone, twelve survive in London, still used by Cab Drivers and protected as listed buildings.
