Description
Gravestones in Highgate Cemetery. A world-famous cemetery, the burial place of many famous people. One such is boxer Tom Sayers (1826-1865) who was Heavyweight Champion of England 1857-1860. He was buried there, aged 39, on 15 November 1865. A massive crowd accompanied his cortege to the cemetery. His marble tomb, the work of the sculptor Morton Edwards, is guarded by the stone image of his beloved mastiff dog, Lion, who was chief mourner at the funeral.
