Staff stand by a bus outside Shirley Residential School, Wickham Road, Croydon. Ivy is growing on part of the outside of the school and trees are visible in the background. The bus is a Surrey Motors coach with Pullman branding on the roof luggage rack. The School accommodated 370 children, aged 2 to 15 years old. It was built in the cottage homes model, where children were looked after in family sized group homes run by house parents. The site had 38 cottages, which were named after trees and bushes, there was also a school, staff accommodation, a porter’s lodge, laundry block, workshops, a shop, swimming baths and infirmary. The London County Council (L.C.C.) ran the home from 1930 until 1965 and then it was taken over by Lambeth Council. The school closed in 1983 and today most of the buildings have been demolished.
