Ashford Residential School was built for the West London School District, which covered Hammersmith, Fulham and parts of the modern-day City of Westminster. The school was completed in 1872. It accommodated 800 children. The main building consisted of a large central administrative block with side wings, one for the boys and one for the girls. There was also a chapel, infirmary and farm. The site was taken over by London County Council (L.C.C.) from 1930 and closed in 1955. The buildings have been demolished and on the site today, is a modern housing estate and HMP Bronzefield.
