Description
The photograph depicts the children playing in the courtyard, with some of them holding cricket bats. Behind the courtyard on the right-hand side is a large school building. Christ’s Hospital was founded by Edward VI in 1552, as a home for poor or orphaned children. Originally Christ’s Hospital was housed in the former Greyfriars monastery in Newgate Street in the City of London. In 1902 the school relocated to Horsham, West Sussex. The original school buildings were destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War. In the background on the left-hand side is the tower of St Sepulchre without Newgate Church. Its tower was restored in the early eighteenth century. The church still stands today, opposite the Central Criminal Court, at the junction of Holborn Viaduct and Giltspur Street, and is the largest of the City of London’s parish churches.
