Number 5 Hill Street is an early-eighteenth century three-storey house in the Central Richmond Conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. It was Grade II listed in 1979; listing number: 1065435. From 1914 it served as the frontage for a cinema auditorium built to the rear, originally known as The New Royalty Kinema, and became The Gaumont in 1949, retaining the name until it closed in 1980. The auditorium was demolished and rebuilt as the Filmhouse with a new frontage on Water Lane, now the Curzon Richmond. The house retains many original features, including a full-height balustraded staircase, panelling, and some original fireplaces. The cellar is currently occupied by the Richmond Vault beer cellar, and the upper floors by a private dental practice. This view shows a disused storeroom with panelled walls, an open door revealing a room beyond with shelves fixed to the wall containing a row of box files with a large Southern Comfort bottle displayed on top. Some boxes are stowed haphazardly on the free-standing timber storeroom utility shelves, having once contained Ever Ready batteries, an electric iron, and a Royal Air Force Association charity collection.
