Description
Number 5 Hill Street is an early-eighteenth century three-storey house in the Central Richmond Conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. It was Grade II listed in 1979; listing number: 1065435. From 1914 it served as the frontage for a cinema auditorium built to the rear, originally known as The New Royalty Kinema, and became The Gaumont in 1949, retaining the name until it closed in 1980. The auditorium was demolished and rebuilt as the Filmhouse with a new frontage on Water Lane, now the Curzon Richmond. The house retains many original features, including a full-height balustraded staircase, panelling, and some original fireplaces. The cellar is currently occupied by the Richmond Vault beer cellar, and the upper floors by a private dental practice. This view shows a landing which has panelled walls and three panelled doors, one of which is opened to reveal an empty room beyond with a calendar pinned to the wall, another with simpler panelling having a letterbox in its transom. The corner of the balustrade is just visible to the left of view.
