Description
This view shows a row of buildings on the south side of Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Most prominent in view is number 21, formerly the village post office and is still called The Old Post House today. It is listed locally as a Building of townscape Merit. Also listed locally is number 23, shown beyond its gated driveway as the front offices of White Leaf Eng Co Ltd. Used previously as a butcher's shop, it has since been converted into flats. The smaller shop building at number 25 is also listed locally. Number 27 is now a modern residential development, but the clock tower shown beyond is part of the nineteenth-century Waterworks Gatehouse, Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252975, originally built by the Southwark & Vauxhall Water Company and in use at the time as the administrative offices of the Metropolitan Water Board's Hampton works. The impressive standpipe tower shown in the distance was part of the waterworks' Morelands Building Engine House. The tower was demolished in 1970, but the Morelands Building remains and was Grade II listed in 1968, listing number 1261968.
