This view shows a row of three cottages at numbers 13-15 First Cross Road in the Twickenham Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Overlooking The Green from its west side, they are all listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. Believed originally to have been artisans' cottages built in the early nineteenth century they have long narrow rear gardens and once overlooked Workhouse Allotment, created when the land, formerly part of Hounslow Heath, was first enclosed in 1818. First Cross Road used to be called Workhouse Road and the workhouse itself once stood across the former Hanworth and Twickenham Road to the north. The workhouse was demolished in 1845 and the allotment was sold to Twickenham Town Council for recreational use.
