Description
General view of Buccleuch Gardens and Langham Lodge at 144-152 Petersham Road, Richmond upon Thames. A brick shelter with six bays supported by brick piers sits within Buccleuch Gardens, containing wooden benches. To the right is a gated archway called Grotto Gate, which runs under Petersham Road and leads to Langham Lodge. There is a drinks fountain in view. This was the site of the former eighteenth-century Buccleuch House estate. The gardens were opened to the public in May 1887, together with the Terrace Gardens on the opposite side of Petersham Road. Buccleuch House was demolished in the 1930s. Langholm Lodge is an early nineteenth-century, two-storey building, with five of its seven windows visible. It was formerly part of the Buccleuch Estate. Attached is the former coach house and stable block. Langham Lodge is Grade II listed, listing number 1389709. The building was used as offices and workshops for the former estate and later as offices for the local council's Leisure Services Department. It was converted into residential accommodation in 2004. Buccleuch Gardens are Grade II listed, listing number 1001551. The gardens, structures and buildings in the image lie within the Richmond Hill Conservation Area.
