This row of cottages, known as Merton Cottages, and the adjacent public house, The Plough (just on view to the right), in Christchurch Road, East Sheen, date back to the eighteenth century. They are located in the Christchurch Road conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames to the north of Richmond Park, just across the road from Percy Lodge, originally a hunting lodge for the Duke of Northumberland. Showing from left to right, number 54 just in view is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit, numbers 50-52 favoured in this view were Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1080839, and numbers 48, 46, and 44 were also Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1358082. The Plough public house, also of the eighteenth century, is listed locally. Parked in the road in front of number 48 is a Renault 5 with a Rome registration plate and Italy sticker on the tailgate. A foldaway-style bicycle is also partly in view.
