View of shop fronts at 40-48 Tooting High Street, Tooting, on the corner of Defoe Road. In the distance at number 40 Tooting High Street is the Old Castle public house, which has since been moved to the neighbouring plot. The building next to this has three lanterns outside, and a group of small children stood nearby. The next shop has a large sign above reading 'shop closing down, compulsory sale'. On the side of the shop awning is the name Berkeley House. At number 48 is P Jung, a baker's shop. The windows are adorned with painted advertisements for Hovis, Cytos Bread, and Cadbury's Chocolate. There is a crowd of gentleman and young boys outside looking at the camera. These buildings have since been demolished and new shop fronts have been built on the site. Defoe Road was renamed Garratt Lane sometime in the first half of the twentieth century.
