Description
View of Earlsfield House, 1 Swaffield Road, Wandsworth, at the corner of Garratt Lane, with parked cars including a Mini. Originally known as Wandsworth Children's Receiving Home and opened by the Board of Guardians. In 1930, the London County Council (LCC) took over the running of the home and re-named it Earlsfield House Children’s Receiving Home. Children would stay there when they first came into care, for a short time until they were either able to return home or moved to a longer-term placement. Initially it accommodated 101 children. During the World War II the children were evacuated to residential schools, and it re-opened in 1945. It then accommodated 53 children, aged 2 to 15 years old. In 1965, Wandsworth Council took over the running of the home. Later it closed and Earlsfield House has now been converted into residential flats.
