Description
Rooftop view of Ocean Estate in Knott Street and Masters Street, Stepney, viewed from Searle House looking north. In the foreground are two houses and a pub in Masters Street. The pub is the Anchor and Hope on the corner and its address is 90 Duckett Street. Leading from Masters Street is Knott Street, which contains rows of two-storey terraced houses. On the left-hand side beyond Knott Street, Cadiz and Shandy Streets can be seen. The houses on the right-hand side of Knott Street are back to back with houses in Duckett Street. Behind Duckett Street, St Faith’s Church is visible, with trees around it in the Recreation Ground, which was the former East London Cemetery. Searle House was a block of flats between Masters Street and Waley Street from north to south and Ocean Street and Duckett Street from west to east. The photo was taken from the block containing flats 19-25, which no longer exists.
