Description
Rear elevation of numbers 41-49 Ben Jonson Road, Stepney, three-storey derelict buildings with back yards piled with rubble. Number 41, a derelict shop, Staffords Newsagents and Stationers, stood on the corner of what was Essian Street. There is an empty space where number 43 once stood. Through this gap Solent House, a four-storey block of flats with shops below can be seen. This building has an LCC Blue Plaque commemorating Doctor Barnardo, 1845-1905, who began his work for children in a building on this site in 1866. This photograph would have been taken from the corner of Essian Street and Monteagle Street, both of which no longer exist. These buildings have been demolished and the site now forms part of a housing complex centred around Bermuda Way including Hierro and Orkney Courts.
