Description
24 Southwark Street, Borough, Southwark. A view of commercial premises built as a hop and malt exchange in 1866, designed by R. H. Moore. Iron gates adorned with a decoration of hop plants are in the entrance and carvings above show hop gatherers working. Built to allow hop growers, merchants and dealers a single market centre, there was a great hall used as a trading floor and a glass roof allowed traders to view the hops in natural daylight. Image shows the building after a fire in 1920 which led to the top storey being rebuilt at a reduced height and the original glass and iron roof replaced. The building was thereafter used as offices and is Grade II listed; listing number 1385923.
