Description
View of the east side of Nelson Square, Newington. The houses have basements with railings, fanlights over front doors and iron balconies at first-floor level. The designer of the substantial Georgian square and garden, built c1808-14, was most likely Samuel Pepys Cockerell. The square was very badly hit by World War II bombing and was demolished in the 1950s. The site was redeveloped by the LCC as Nelson Square Gardens c1956-64 to provide much needed postwar social housing, and is still extant.
