A view of the front elevation of the classically-styled Shoreditch Town Hall, Old Street, Shoreditch. The eastern five bays of the building, to the left in this image, were built to serve the vestry in 1866. In the tower above this section, the figure of Progress bearing a torch steps from a niche. The building was expanded in 1898-1902 to accommodate the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch, which was created under the 1899 Local Government Act. That expansion added the three western bays, above which is a pediment with female figures in classical attire representing light and power with the motto "More light more power". The borough was merged into the London Borough of Hackney in 1965 when the building lost its town hall function. The spire at the left-hand edge of the picture is that of St Leonard's Church, Shoreditch. Scaffolding has been erected between the town hall and number 374 Old Street to the right. That building appears to be under renovation, with some sacks of rubble in front of an unoccupied ground floor shop window. Shoreditch Town Hall was Grade II listed in 1975, listing number 1235232.
