Description
Side elevation of United Kingdom House at 164-182 Oxford Street, Westminster, occupied by Gamages department store. Gamages was well known for its toys and mail order catalogue and here there are 'Sale' signs in the windows. The building was formerly occupied by the furniture company Waring and Gillow. It opened in 1906 and was designed by R. Frank Atkinson. Its style was inspired by Hampton Court Palace with red brick and ornamentation. Warring and Gillow began to go into decline when the Lancaster workshops closed in 1962, and United Kingdom House became the premises of Gamages. In 1977 the internal structure of the building was redeveloped to create an open plan layout for office use, and its retail space was later occupied by Uniqlo and H&M. United Kingdom House was Grade II* listed in 1973, listing number 1066035. Taxis and cars are on the road.
