Description
View of Baylis Road, Lambeth, looking towards Waterloo Road, showing a road flanked by a terrace of three-storey buildings with shop fronts, some of which have visible graffiti. There are a few vehicles and pedestrians in the street. At the end of the road the Old Vic Theatre can be seen; it is a Grade II* listed building, originally called the Royal Coburg Theatre. It was contructed by Rudolph Cabanel in 1816, with interiors designed by John Thomas Serres. The Theatre was renamed the Royal Victoria Hall in 1833. The building hosted the Old Vic company in 1929 and the National Theatre Company between 1963 and 1976. Following World War II the route of the road was redirected north-east. This spot is now the site of residential blocks and the Waterloo Millennium Green.
