Description
A view of the eighteenth-century Georgian staircase inside the house at 20 Queen Square, Holborn, which was once occupied by the Chalfont House Settlement. Features on the staircase include a Corinthian column post holding up the hand rail and carved foliage and scrolls underneath each step. The banister rails consist of twisted wood and etched columns. On the walls and beneath the stairs are wooden panels, panelled cupboard doors and patterned wallpaper with William Morris and Arts and Crafts style patterns. A Corinthian column is also a feature of the wooden panelling on the wall at the side of the stairs. Under the stairs hang some hats including a bowler hat and a coth cap. On the right of the image is a Georgian panelled door which is open to reveal another six-panelled door. In the door frame of the first door is a semi-circular fan light with a sunrise pattern in the wooden window frame. Underneath the fan light are the words 'In Labore Requies' ('Rest in Work'). On the far right is a lit wall gas lamp. The house no longer exists; part of The President Hotel, Guildford Street, now sits on the site.
